Mozambique Shopping and nightlife
Shopping in Mozambique
Shopping in Mozambique ranges from colourful local markets and craft centres to modern shopping malls in Maputo and other larger cities. Visitors are most likely to shop for locally made handicrafts, textiles, jewellery and food products rather than international brands.
Popular purchases include Makonde wood carvings, woven baskets, batik fabrics, ceramics, beadwork and paintings. Cashew nuts, spices, locally produced coffee and handmade jewellery are also widely available, particularly in tourist areas and artisan markets.
Maputo has the country's largest selection of shopping centres, supermarkets and boutiques, while markets throughout Mozambique sell fresh produce, clothing and household goods alongside locally made crafts. Bargaining is common in markets and with street vendors, but prices are generally fixed in shops and shopping centres.
Shops in Mozambique are generally open from 08:00 to 17:00 or 18:00, Monday to Friday, and from 08:00 to 13:00 on Saturdays. Smaller shops and markets may open earlier and close later, particularly in busy urban areas.
Shopping centres and supermarkets in Maputo, Beira and other larger cities often remain open into the evening and may also open on Sundays and public holidays. Opening hours vary between individual businesses.
Nightlife in Mozambique
Nightlife in Mozambique is centred on Maputo, where restaurants, bars, live music venues and nightclubs remain busy well into the evening. The capital has a lively music scene, with jazz, marrabenta, Afro-pop and international music regularly performed at venues throughout the city.
Coastal destinations such as Tofo, Vilankulo, Pemba and Ponta do Ouro have a more relaxed nightlife centred on beach bars, seafood restaurants and resort lounges. Live music and cultural performances are common during weekends and holiday periods.
Casinos operate in Maputo and a small number of other tourist destinations. Outside the main cities and resort areas, nightlife is generally limited to local bars, restaurants and hotel entertainment.
