Where to stay in Mozambique

Hotels

Mozambique offers a wide range of accommodation, from international hotels and business hotels in Maputo and other major cities to boutique lodges, guesthouses and budget hostels throughout the country. Beach resorts are concentrated along the Indian Ocean coast and on islands such as the Bazaruto and Quirimbas archipelagos.

Safari lodges and tented camps operate in national parks including Gorongosa and Maputo National Park, while eco-lodges and small locally owned properties can be found in many coastal and rural areas. Self-catering apartments and holiday villas are also available in popular beach destinations such as Vilankulo, Tofo and Ponta do Ouro.

Standards and facilities vary, particularly outside the main cities and established tourist areas. Power outages and interruptions to water supplies can occur, and some properties rely on generators or solar power for backup.

Advance booking is advisable during the dry season, particularly from June to October, and during Christmas, New Year and other public holiday periods when beach resorts and safari lodges are especially popular.

Camping

Camping is available in many national parks, coastal destinations and tourist areas throughout Mozambique. Designated campsites range from basic facilities with shared amenities to well-equipped sites offering electricity, ablution blocks and cooking areas.

Many beach lodges, backpacker hostels and safari lodges also provide camping facilities, particularly around Tofo, Vilankulo, Ponta do Ouro and Gorongosa National Park. Some campsites offer equipment hire for travellers who are not carrying their own gear.

Wild camping is not recommended. Travellers should use designated campsites or obtain permission before camping on private or community land, and should seek local advice regarding safety and environmental conditions.
