Where to stay in Latvia
Latvia offers a wide range of accommodation options, from international hotels and boutique guesthouses to rural farm stays and self-catering apartments. Standards are generally good throughout the country, particularly in Riga and other major tourist areas.
Riga contains the country's largest concentration of hotels, including international chains, boutique properties and budget hostels. Accommodation ranges from luxury hotels in restored historic buildings to modern business hotels and inexpensive backpacker options.
Outside the capital, guesthouses, countryside lodges and small family-run hotels are common, particularly in coastal areas, national parks and rural regions. Farm stays and nature lodges are especially popular in Gauja National Park and other forested areas.
Self-catering apartments are widely available in Riga, Jūrmala and other tourist destinations, while spa hotels and wellness resorts are particularly common along the Baltic coast.
Advance booking is advisable during the summer season, especially in Riga during major festivals and in coastal resorts during warmer months.
Camping is popular in Latvia, particularly during the summer months when long daylight hours and relatively mild temperatures encourage outdoor activities. Campsites are found across the country, especially near lakes, forests, national parks and along the Baltic coast.
Facilities range from simple rural campsites to larger sites offering cabins, electricity, showers and recreational facilities. Camping is particularly popular in Gauja National Park, along the Baltic coastline and near lakes and rivers used for kayaking and fishing.
Wild camping is generally tolerated in remote natural areas provided visitors behave responsibly, avoid private property and follow local environmental regulations. However, restrictions may apply in protected nature areas and national parks.
Mosquitoes can be common in forested and wetland areas during summer, particularly near lakes and rivers.
