Where to stay in Romania
Romania offers a wide range of accommodation options, from luxury international hotels and boutique guesthouses to rural homestays and budget hostels. Prices are generally lower than in much of Western Europe, particularly outside Bucharest and the main tourist areas.
Bucharest has the country's largest concentration of hotels, including international chains, boutique properties and serviced apartments catering to both business and leisure travellers. Major regional cities such as Cluj-Napoca, Brașov, Sibiu and Timișoara also offer extensive accommodation choices.
Traditional guesthouses and family-run pensions are especially popular in rural regions such as Transylvania, Maramureș and Bucovina, where visitors can often experience local food, hospitality and village life. Mountain resorts in the Carpathians provide hotels, ski lodges and chalets catering to outdoor tourism throughout the year.
Short-term apartment rentals are widely available in cities and tourist destinations, while hostels and budget accommodation are common in university cities and backpacker areas.
Camping is popular in Romania, particularly in the Carpathian Mountains, the Danube Delta and along parts of the Black Sea coast. Campsites range from simple rural sites to larger holiday parks with modern facilities.
Mountain regions such as Brașov, Sibiu and the Apuseni Mountains attract hikers, campers and outdoor enthusiasts during the warmer months, while the Danube Delta offers camping opportunities focused on boating, fishing and wildlife.
Facilities vary considerably between campsites. Larger and more established sites may offer electricity, showers, restaurants and campervan facilities, while more remote locations can be relatively basic.
Wild camping exists in practice in some rural and mountain areas, though permission from landowners is advisable and restrictions may apply in protected natural areas and national parks.
