Where to stay in North Macedonia (FYR Macedonia)

Hotels

Skopje has the country's largest selection of hotels, including international chains, boutique properties and budget hostels. Ohrid is particularly popular during summer, when lakeside hotels, guesthouses and holiday apartments attract large numbers of visitors.

Family-run guesthouses and small hotels are common throughout the country and often provide a more personal and traditional experience. Rural tourism has also grown in recent years, with village stays and mountain lodges available in some regions.

Accommodation standards can vary, particularly in smaller towns and rural areas, though hospitality is generally warm and welcoming. Advance booking is advisable during the summer tourist season and major public holidays.

Camping

Popular camping areas include locations near Ohrid, Struga and Mavrovo National Park, where visitors can enjoy lakeside or mountain scenery. Campsites range from basic facilities to more developed holiday parks with electricity, showers and restaurants.

Wild camping is not officially regulated and may not always be permitted, particularly in protected areas and national parks. Travellers should seek permission from landowners where possible and avoid camping in environmentally sensitive areas.
