Alabama has more than 150,000 lane-miles of roadways, including 11 interstate highways maintained by the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT).

Car hire

All major US rental car agencies have branches in Huntsville, Birmingham, Montgomery and Mobile. Smaller towns and cities, like Daphne, Auburn, Bessemer, Oxford, Pelham, Muscle Shoals, Florence and Gadsden, are served by branches of Hertz and Enterprise.


Uber ( recently rolled out its service in Montgomery, Birmingham, Homewood, Mobile, Mountain Brook and Trussville.

Getting around towns and cities

Taxis are available in the cities, as are buses in the larger cities.


There are three major train stations in the state of Alabama: Anniston, Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. The stations are all served by Amtrak’s ‘Crescent’ service. The daily route links New York Penn Station with New Orleans, stopping at a number of major cities along the way, including Washington DC, Philadelphia, Lynchburg and Greenville. Amtrak (tel: +1 800 872 7245, in the USA only; also operate a "thruway" bus service from Tuscaloosa, connecting rail passenger to the following towns: Brent, Marion, Selma, Camden, Thomasville, Grove Hill, Jackson and Mt. Vernon.
