Bangkok Don Mueang International Airport Guide (DMK)
Bangkok Don Mueang International Airport is the smaller of two international airports in Thailand’s capital city and is actually one of the oldest commercial airports in the world. The Don Muang Toll Way directly connects central Bangkok with Don Muang Airport.
From central Bangkok, head north on Phahonyothin Road, and merge onto the Don Muang Toll Way, continuing north to the airport. The total drive time from central Bangkok to the airport is approximately 32 minutes.
Public Transport
Rail:Trains run from Don Mueang Station opposite the airport to Hua Lumpong Railway Station in central Bangkok (journey time: around 50 minutes). From here, it is possible to connect to trains serving the whole country. Fares are around ฿50.
Bus: Air-conditioned airport buses leave from the front of the arrivals area. Destinations served include several city hotels, the Grand Palace, Sukhumvit and Hua Lumpong Railway Station. Regular public buses also run to Hua Lumpong Railway Station, Silom Road and the southern and eastern region bus terminals. Special bus A1 offers services to Bangkok bus station every 20 minutes between 0830-2330. Fares are low, starting at around ฿25. There is additionally a regular free shuttle bus service connecting Don Muaeng with Bangkok's other airport, Suvarnabhumi.
Taxi: Licensed metered city taxis (with black and yellow plates) can be flagged down outside the departures area; passengers should make sure that the meter is switched on and never use unlicensed taxis. It is a good idea to have the required destination written in Thai. Be prepared to bargain over the fare, which will start at about ฿400 for city centre destinations. The journey time into Bangkok can vary between 30 and 90 minutes, depending on traffic.
Terminal facilities
There are three banks within Bangkok Don Mueang International Airport. ATMs and bureaux de change are available in the arrival and departure halls of the main terminal.
Wi-Fi internet access (free for the first two hours) is available throughout Bangkok Don Mueang Airport. Public telephones are located in the main terminal building. International calls can be made from the post office.
Several shops offer a range of items for purchase, including branded souvenirs, books, jewellery and electronic goods.
A lost property service is operated by the information office (tel: +66 2 535 1100). Luggage storage facilities (tel: +66 2 535 1882) are located in the departure hall on the second floor of the main terminal and in the arrivals hall.
Emergency medical care is available on the first floor at the north end of Terminal 1. There is a medical centre on the ground floor of the terminal, near the domestic departure hall. A tour operator has an office in Arrivals. There are also spa and massage services, a beauty salon and a prayer room.
Airport facilities
The Amari Don Muang Airport hotel (tel: +66 2 566 1020; www.amari.com), that's connected to the airport via a covered walkway, offers business facilities, including a 24-hour business centre, internet and conference rooms, as well as a ballroom that can accommodate up to 830 people.
International car hire companies, Avis, Budget, Hertz and Sixt all have desks in the arrivals area of the terminal. Foreign travellers should be aware that driving in and around Bangkok is not particularly advised, especially for those unfamiliar with the level of traffic found in the city centre.
Hotels
There is one hotel linked to Bangkok Don Mueang International Airport, the Amari Don Muang Airport, which is situated opposite the terminal and is connected via an air-conditioned footbridge. A number of other hotels can be found nearby – the Thai Hotel Association (tel: +66 2 216 9496; www.thaihotels.org) has reservation desks within the terminal to help with enquiries. Most major hotels in and around the city are served by courtesy minibus routes.
About a 10-minute walk from the airport, this is a small 'boutique' style property also convenient for the nearby IMPACT exhibition and convention centre. It features an open terrace dining area.
Connected to the main terminal via a pedestrian footbridge, Amari Don Muang Airport houses a swimming pool, a business centre and a ballroom accommodating up to 830 people. A free shuttle service is provided to nearby BTS Skytrain and MRT (underground) stations.
Miracle Grand Convention Hotel is located close to Bangkok Don Mueang International Airport and boasts a range of facilities, including a swimming pool, business centre, currency exchange and a sauna.
The Asia Airport Hotel is located in a leisure complex 3km (2 miles) from Bangkok Don Mueang International Airport. The hotel has an on-site café, swimming pool and fitness centre. A range of shops, restaurants and entertainment venues are available on other floors of the complex.
