Entrecôte Steakhouse & Seafood Bar

One of the chicest areas of Tallinn, Kadriorg Park is a cosmopolitan spot that draws well-heeled visitors from all over Europe. Unsurprisingly, any restaurant in this area will serve food of the same calibre and Entrecôte Steakhouse is no exception. Great for meat lovers.

Stenhus

A favourite with visiting businessmen, local celebrities and politicians alike, this classy Tallinn restaurant is located within one of the city's finest luxury hotels and is famous for its 13th-century vaulted ceilings and huge log fireplace. Welcoming and cosy, the fare is comprised of European classics, largely from France and Italy, although the tasty bit of Estonian cuisine does creep in. In summer, lunch and dinner are also served in the courtyard garden.

Gloria

Once you step inside Gloria's capacious 1930s dining room, it’s not hard to see why it's long been considered one of Tallinn’s most glamorous dining spots. Elegant muted gold walls, crisp white table linen and vast Baccarat crystal chandeliers scream old money, while the unobtrusive waiting staff would do Jeeves proud. The fare is equally exalted – an unusual mixture of high French and Russian cuisine, all served up perfectly cooked and glamorously presented.

Munga Kelder

Easily one of the cosiest restaurants in Tallinn, Munga Kelder (which translates to ‘Monk’s Cellar’) is a period gem of a place. Decked out in dark wood and boasting austere white walls, colour comes courtesy of mediaeval stained glass and old-fashioned plaits of garlic that hang from its beams. The menu is equally antediluvian and takes patrons on a tour of European favourites past with French frog’s legs and German potato salad jostling for space with chateaubriand steak and Estonian classics.

Vanaema Juures

One of the nicest spots to give the local food a try, Vanaema Juures translates as ‘Grandmother’s Place’ and it certainly lives up to its name. Occupying a cosy Old Town cellar, the restaurant is festooned with old-fashioned knick-knacks, many of which date back to the 1920s and 1930s, as well as rickety wooden tables and yellowed oil paintings. On the menu are homemade Estonian classics such as pork roast and elk stew, all of which are served up in pleasingly large quantities.

Korsaar

Themed restaurants usually boast better décor than food but Korsaar is one of the few happy exceptions. Inspired by all things pirate, stepping through its doors feels a little like stepping onto a ship, thanks to the assortment of rigging, barrels and boards dotted liberally around the dining room. There are huge fish tanks too - including one that contains several sharks. The food is simple but tasty: expect expertly grilled meat and fish served up with ‘grog’ (rum cocktails) and ‘rivers of wine’ as the menu amusingly puts it.

Elli’s vrapikohvik (Elli's place)

It's literally just a minute from Tallinn Tourist Information Centre if you know where to look. This place sits on a quiet street and has an authentic and local vibe. Some say it has the best wrap in town and after trying a few, we agree wholeheartedly.

Estonia Burger Factory

A juicy burger made from local organic Angus beef in a homemade bun, what's not to love? The Vegan burger with grilled tofu is equally delicious too.

Von Krahli Aed

With a menu based on local, organic produce, Von Krahli Aed is a treat for your taste buds as much as it is for your wallet. Though set in mediaeval dining rooms, most of grub here is fairly healthy, with quail and traditional fish soup among choices. Although the chef occasionally strikes out into French fare, most of what's on offer is thoroughly Estonian. There's plenty of vegan and gluten-free options as well.
