Jackson Hole resort information & après-ski

Après-ski

Après-ski in Jackson Hole is divided between the slopeside scene and the more atmospheric nightspots in downtown Jackson.

The Mangy Moose (tel: +1 307 733 4913; www.mangymoose.com) in Teton Village base has managed to survive all the changes over the years and remains one of the world’s great après-ski venues. Regularly topping various magazines’ best ski bar polls, skiers and boarders have been frequenting the establishment since 1967.

The wider choice of après-ski bars in central Jackson is vast and includes several genuine cowboy saloons. The Snake River Brewing Company (tel: +1 307 739 2337; www.snakeriverbrewing.com), Wyoming’s oldest brewery, is the place to taste local creations.

Eating out

There is a limited but growing choice of restaurants in Jackson Hole, but a far wider selection in Jackson with more than 100 dining options. These range from fast food to gourmet options.

At the top of the Bridger gondola (which stays open into the evening), the Couloir restaurant offers fine Western cuisine amid stunning scenery with dishes such as bison and sticky-glazed pork. Meanwhile, near the base village, Teton Thai (tel: +1 307 733 0022; www.tetonthai.com) serves undisputedly some of the best Thai food in the region.

In Jackson town the choice is vast with every niche catered for, including organic and vegan diners at the popular Lotus Café (tel: +1 307 734 0882; www.theorganiclotus.com).

For classic American fare, the Blue Lion (tel: +1 307 733 3912; www.bluelionrestaurant.com) is a long time local’s favourite, while The Bird (tel: +1 307 732 2473; www.thebirdinjackson.com) is a great option for those craving burgers.

The steaks are of course big in this cowboy country, with the White Buffalo Club (tel: +1 888 256 8182; www.whitebuffaloclub.com) one of the best places to try one.

Resort Information

Beyond the slopes

Jackson Hole’s base facilities have grown rapidly over the last decade or so.

Other than in-hotel spa facilities, most activities on offer are strictly outdoor affairs, ranging from the regular ski resort offerings of dog sledding, tubing, snowmobile tours and snowshoeing to ballooning, climbing and sightseeing plane trips. Additionally, wildlife safaris can introduce visitors to some of the 10,000 elk that live in the area.

The town of Jackson itself, a short commute away, is a busy year-round resort destination even without the skiing and has galleries, cinemas, museums, a library, concerts, indoor tennis and swimming.

Those with a head for heights can embark on a paragliding trip (tel: +1 307 690 8726; www.jhparagliding.com) high above the bustling slopes, or, for highly experienced skiers, sample heli-skiing (tel: +1 307 733 3274) in five mountain ranges surrounding Jackson Hole.

Family fun

The Wrangler Day Care centre (tel: +1 307 739 2788) accepts children aged from six months to three years and offers lessons in basic skiing techniques. There are also tailored ski lessons from the resort's ski school, with special camps also operating during school holiday periods

For older children, the slopeside Kids Ranch in Cody House offers a range of activities, including an outdoor snow play area with an easy-to-use magic carpet lift.

Evening activities include the ‘Kids Night Out’, where children from the age of four to 18 can relax with a range of entertainment and games away from their parents, from pizza nights and films to floodlit sledging.

Retail therapy

There is a clutch of shops in Teton Village; most of which are ski or board stores. A new addition is Wool & Whiskey (7652 Granite Ridge Loop Road), which offers men’s clothing and a well-stocked whiskey bar.

With limited shopping in Jackson Hole ski resort, serious shoppers can head to Jackson where a mix of regional arts and crafts outlets and national chains await – there are dozens of quirky and interesting stores in the town.

Splashing out

Switch skis or board for a snowmobile and zoom across Yellowstone National Park, visit Old Faithful and then enjoy a swim in a natural thermal pool, with Togwotee Adventures Snowmobile Tours (tel: +1 307 733 8800;www.togwoteesnowmobile.com).
