Flying to Namibia

The national carrier is Air Namibia, headquartered in Windhoek, the country's capital. Other airlines that fly to Namibia include British Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways and South African Airways.

Windhoek has two airports – the main one is Hosea Kutako International Airport, about 45km (28mi) east of Windhoek and the second (and smaller) one is Eros Airport, about 5km (3mi) south of Windhoek's central business district. Most international flights land at Hosea Kutako, while Eros is commonly used for domestic flights, private charters and fly-in safari trips.

Airport Code: WDH. Location: The airport is 42km (25 miles) from the city (journey time - 30 minutes). Website: http://www.airports.com.na. Public transport description: Shuttle services carrying two or more passengers at a time go to the city. Private taxis are also available.

Travel by rail

The rail service connecting Keetmanshoop (a city in south-eastern Namibia) and Upington (a town in South Africa) is no longer running. It has been replaced by a regular bus service managed by Intercape (www.intercape.co.za).

However, the luxury train Shongololo Dune Express (shongololo.com) that runs between Pretoria (South Africa) and Walvis Bay (Namibia) is still operating.

Driving to Namibia

There are land crossings between Namibia and its immediate neighbours, namely South Africa, Botswana, Angola and Zambia.

Getting to Namibia by boat

Namibia's main port is Walvis Bay and the secondary port is Lüderitz.

Cruise ships:

Cruises that sail the South Atlantic Ocean often call at Walvis Bay, which is almost in between Cape Town (South Africa) and Luanda (Angola).
