Passports

Montenegro is not a member of the European Union or the Schengen Area, but it is a candidate for EU membership and maintains close border cooperation with EU countries.

EU and EEA nationals: Citizens of EU and EEA countries may enter Montenegro with a valid passport or national ID card for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Non-EU nationals: Travellers must have a passport issued within the past ten years, valid for at least three months beyond the intended stay, and may be asked to show proof of onward travel, accommodation, and sufficient funds.

All foreign nationals must register their place of stay with the local police within 24 hours of arrival in Montenegro. Hotels and licensed accommodation providers will usually register guests automatically. Travellers staying in private accommodation must register themselves at the nearest Police Directorate office. Keep the registration confirmation with you until departure.
