Australian Dollar (AUD; symbol A$) = 100 cents. Notes are in denominations of A$100, 50, 20, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of A$2 and 1, and 50, 20, 10 and 5 cents.

Credit cards

MasterCard and Visa have very limited acceptance. There are ATMs at branches of the Bank of Kiribati/ANZ in Betio, Bairiki and Bikenibeu (all on Tarawa atoll).

Travellers cheques

Mon-Fri 0930-1500. The Bikenibeu branch is open 0900-1400.

Kiribati duty free

The following goods may be imported into Kiribati without incurring customs duty:

• 200 cigarettes or 225g of tobacco or cigars.
• 1L of spirits and 1L of wine (only if aged 21 years and older).

Banned imports

Prohibited imports include counterfeit currency, indecent/obscene goods, matches containing white or yellow phosphorus, unauthorised goods bearing the national emblem of Kiribati, flick knives and imitation firearms.

Restricted imports include pure alcohol and soil.
