Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport is the main airport serving the Greek capital, and it is also the country’s busiest. There is an information desk in the Main Terminal. Additionally, an airport information line (tel: +30 210 353 0000) operates 24 hours a day.
An underground walkway and ground level path connect the Main Terminal with the Satellite Terminal.
From central Athens, the airport is accessed via the Attiki Odos toll road (A6), which circles around the north and east of the city.
Public Transport
Rail: The airport is linked to Athens Central Railway Station (also known as Larissa Station) and the port of Piraeus by the suburban rail system. Metro services link the city to the airport via metro line 3 (journey time: 45 minutes; fare: €10). Bus: Several bus routes (tel: +30 210 820 0999; www.oasa.gr) connect the airport with central Athens (journey time: 65 minutes; fare: €6) and Piraeus (journey time: 90 minutes; fare: €5), 24 hours a day. Some services also connect with the Metro.
Coach: Five KTEL (tel: +30 210 880 8080; www.ktelattikis.gr – in Greek only) express services run between the airport, Markopoulo and Rafina. Other KTEL services also run to Lavrion, Kalyvia and Keratea. Coaches depart from the arrivals level of the Main Terminal, near exits 4 and 5.
Taxi: Taxis leave from outside the arrivals level of the Main Terminal building. The fare to the city centre is €35-40 (more at night), and the journey time can be anywhere between 40 and 60 minutes, depending on traffic.
Terminal facilities
Free Wi-Fi internet access is available throughout Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport. There are also Internet Access Points throughout the terminals. Courtesy telephones are located throughout the airport complex and a post office is situated in arrivals.
Most restaurants and bars are located in the Main Terminal’s departure area, but there are a few options in Arrivals. The Satellite Terminal also has a restaurant.
Shops, including duty-free for passengers exiting the EU, are concentrated in the departures area of the Main Terminal. A full range of goods is available, including local gift items. There are a few further options in Arrivals and in the Satellite Terminal.
Left-luggage services (tel: +30 210 353 0352) and a lost property office (tel: +30 210 353 0515) are located in Arrivals in the Main Terminal. A porter service is available 24 hours a day (tel: +30 210 353 0100).
Airport facilities
Seven Lounges is located in the departures area of the Main Terminal, providing basic business facilities. Further conference facilities are available at the Sofitel Athens Airport Hotel (tel: +30 210 354 4000; www.sofitel.com).
Facilities for disabled passengers at the airport include: easily accessible and text telephones, disabled toilets, adapted walkways and lifts, Braille signage, tactile flooring, and an alarm system to alert visually and hearing-impaired passengers in case of emergency.
Electric cars are available to transport disabled passengers between the two terminals, and there are around 90 dedicated disabled car parking spaces at the airport.
Any passengers who may require additional assistance are advised to contact their airline before travelling.
There are spaces for around 7,000 cars at the airport. Short-term P1 and P2 car parks are located just outside the arrivals halls of the Main Terminal – parking is free for 20 minutes in these short-term car parks. The long-term P3 car park is connected to the Main Terminal building via a courtesy shuttle bus and by a pedestrian bridge over the main road. A valet parking service is also available. Parking spaces can be reserved via the airport website at reduced prices.
International car hire firms: Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz and Sixt are represented at the airport, with offices located on the arrivals level of the Main Terminal building.
Boasting a spa, conference facilities and a choice of restaurants and bars, the Sofitel Athens Airport Hotel is in an ideal position next to the terminals at Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport.
The striking yellow and silver Holiday Inn provides a free shuttle service to and from the airport, which is less than 10 minutes away. This hotel houses a business centre, indoor pool, restaurant, bar and gift shop, and extensive meeting space is available for business guests.
A short distance south from the airport, this small (15 rooms) hotel offers good quality budget accommodation in a quiet city suburb. The hotel’s location also makes it a convenient choice for guests wishing to visit central Athens.
