Sylt (Westerland) Airport Guide (GWT)
The airport is located centrally on the island close to Tinnum village.
Westerland Airport serves the small resort island of Sylt, off the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein close to the German/Danish border. Our Westerland Airport guide provides essential contact details for the airport, along with information on transport routes, terminal facilities and nearby accommodation options.
The airport is no more than 10 km (6 miles) from any location on the island. All roads on the island eventually converge close by.
Public Transport
A rail shuttle service (tel: +49 180 699 6633; www.bahn.de) operates from the German mainland to the island. The station is situated 1km (0.6 miles) from the airport. Trains from Leck on the mainland to Sylt take around 1 hour and cost €9.70.
Bus: Regular island buses (tel: +49 180 583 6100; www.svg-busreisen.de) operate services radiating from the railway station close to the airport to various parts of the island.
Taxi: Sylt Taxi (tel: +49 4651 5555; www.sylt-taxi5555.de) operates cab services on the island. Prices depend on the desired destination.
Terminal facilities
Duty-free is not available – and as this is a very small airport shopping choices are extremely limited.
Airport facilities
There are no meeting facilities or lounges located on-site at the small Westerland Airport. However, some of the island's larger hotels offer meeting rooms, including the Hotel Miramar (tel: +49 4651 8550; www.hotel-miramar.de) which is about 2km (1 mile) from the airport on the west coast of the island.
Cars can be hired for delivery to the airport from several operators on the island, including international company Sixt. For more details see the 'Mietwagen' section on the airport website or call +49 4651 920 612.
Located further inland, Hotel Jörg Müller is a small hotel with an emphasis on ‘wellness’ stays. The 22 room hotel includes a gourmet restaurant, cosy bistro bar and more modern wine bar, as well as a spa offering a range of treatments for total relaxation.
Located roughly 2km (1 mile) west of the airport, this 5-star property is one of the islands largest and more luxurious accommodation offerings. Dating back to Victorian times, the hotel offers a range of rooms and suites, and features a gourmet restaurant with summer beachfront terrace.
Benefiting from an excellent beachfront location, the Dünenberg is a less pricey alternative to the luxurious Hotel Miramar. Like its luxurious neighbour, this establishment also offers a restaurant and spa facilities, as well as a wine bar and internet access.
