Where to stay in Gambia

Hotels

The Gambia offers a range of accommodation options, particularly along the Atlantic coast where most tourism is concentrated. Visitors can choose from international-standard beach resorts and boutique hotels to guesthouses, lodges and budget accommodation.

The main tourist areas of Kololi, Kotu, Bakau and Senegambia contain the country's largest concentration of hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues. Many coastal hotels have swimming pools, gardens and direct beach access, while smaller guesthouses often provide a quieter and more personal atmosphere.

Accommodation outside the coastal region is more limited but can include eco-lodges, riverside camps and small locally run guesthouses catering to birdwatchers, wildlife enthusiasts and overland travellers. Standards and facilities may vary considerably in remote areas.

Air conditioning, Wi-Fi and backup generators are common in larger hotels, though occasional power cuts can still occur. During the peak tourist season between roughly November and April, advance booking is advisable in the main resort areas.

Camping

Camping is possible in The Gambia, particularly along the coast and near some nature reserves and riverside areas, though the country has a relatively limited organised campsite network. Most camping facilities cater to overland travellers, birdwatchers and eco-tourism visitors.

Some lodges and camps provide designated camping areas with basic facilities such as showers, toilets and electricity, while riverside camps deeper inland often offer a more rustic experience. Facilities can vary considerably outside the main tourist areas.

Wild camping is not widely practised and travellers should seek permission before camping on private or community land. The dry season between roughly November and April is generally the most comfortable period for camping due to lower humidity and reduced rainfall.
