The Ritz-Carlton in Hong Kong, with its incredible 490m (1,607ft) height, became the world's tallest hotel when it opened last month. Its Ozone bar on the highest floor (118th) - making it the highest bar in the world - is the perfect spot to take in the stunning views of Hong Kong Island and Victoria Harbour while sipping a cocktail or two. The sumptuous spa on the 116th floor is also a good place to admire the city skyline with its floor-to-ceiling windows.

Set on the banks of the Moskva River, the 198m-tall (650ft) hotel boasts stylish apartments on the upper levels, while the 34th-floor Troubadour Karaoke Bar, with its far-reaching views, provides the perfect place to unwind.

The sail-shaped Burj Al Arab in Dubai was the world's tallest hotel at 321m (1,053ft) in height (and also one of the most iconic) when it opened in 1999. For the ultimate in opulence, stay in the royal suite on the 25th floor or, if you have a greater head for heights, take a panoramic lift to the 27th level where the Al Muntaha restaurant and Skyview Bar provide sweeping views of the white-sand Jumeirah Beach 200m (656ft) below.

The Detroit Marriot at The Renaissance Center is the tallest hotel in North America at 222m (728ft) in height, and its mindboggling 1,246 rooms and 52 suites are spread across 72 floors. The highest level includes the Coach Insignia steakhouse restaurant, bar and observation deck, where amazing views of Canada and the Detroit skyline can be seen. Stay in the presidential suite for the ultimate comfort at altitude, with its sweeping 360º vistas from the 70th floor.
